View Full Version : Using R12 compressor on a R134a system?

My dad's 94 Civic A/C compressor bit the bullet. I pulled the compressor off of my old beater (92 Civic) but it was an old R12 system that I had recharged with R134a (retrofit kit). It worked just fine with the only change being the fittings and the R134a. Would that same compressor work ok on my dad's full R134a system?

I plan to drain the compressor out of any remaining oils, possibly having a shop do a quick leak test on it, replace all seals and then install it in my dad's car.

Any A/C experts out there with any info?

All info I could google on the net involved going the other way - putting r134a into an R12 system. I'm trying to be cheap by using parts I've got lying around to get my dad's car working again so that he can use the A/C to de-fog the windshield.

Hi Hanif,
The compressor does not care what refrigerant it compresses. You will not have any issues using that compressor. Draining the old mineral oil is a good idea. Replace the oil with an Ester based oil.
