View Full Version : 2009 CASC-OR SoloSprint School Event 1 - The Chase
When a fast car with a slow driver gets caught up by an underpowered POS Civic with a somewhat quick driver, pride clouds the drivers judgment and s*** happens....... on video.....

Classic. Watching from the timing tent, lap after lap, I knew that was bound to happen. There were a few knobs that didn't want to get their ego's hurt on the Saturday, that guy being one of them. Good job with the 'hunting', Wes. :p
:) I tried a few of those advanced race techniques that TRAC taught us.... It's all about the distraction. I noticed him in the braking zones a couple of times watching me in the mirror so yep, it was bound to happen. I really don't know why he just didn't let me by, the Viper did....
I love that nice, calm stop on your part, Wes. Lalalalaaa, nothing abnormal here ;)
Would love it if people would learn that it's not about the car, it's about the driver of the car. Refusing that pass is something that makes me annoyed. Driver X is just faster, not questioning your manhood.

Yup,
I had the exact experience on my first lapping session, except that he did not quite go all the way around!
I gave him 2 laps and exited the track and rejoined the que
Like Bryan said, I knew it was going to happen. As soon as I saw the rear end starting to go around I just coasted to a nice easy stop. I waited a few seconds and could hear the car turning over but not firing so I drove away. I was really tempted to smile and wave as I drove by him, but thought better of it.
Did he even complete any on track session without spinning?
We were working timing on the first run and as he came up towards timing I said something along the lines of, here comes a red flag, three seconds later the red flag was out....

eep... that guy needs to relax, i think... he turned in 3 times to the kink in the middle of the straight. The saying goes "smooth is fast", not "my mustang is fast".

In support of Joe driving the 87 Mustang GT, he is a fairly new driver, he built the car himself from a poorly handling fox body platform, he is inexperience so it probably it isn't very well sorted, and he is on slicks that take about 5 laps to warm up. That car probably handles like on ice. I think he is doing ok with his experience level and the characteristics of that car.
Joe, should replace the slicks to RA1s and keep practicing.

I heard that mustang wasn't running very well, but I still thought it was the coolest car there. It sounded AWESOME!

Yeah I dunno those details can "support" Joe.
Reminds me of the dood at the AutoX with that RX7 with the big block chevy in it.
Death-Trap.
Why there's still novice drivers that insist on driving a frankenstein car, I'll never know. Talk about an exercise in futility. He's going to have so many bad habits from trying to keep that thing on the track...
Meanwhile he could have bought Wes's Civic and drove the shit out of it.. even crashed it if need be and he'd learn a hell of a lot more.
It's always the domestic brand fans... I'm just sayin'...
John, I should have pulled into the pits and got sent back out again, but given how quickly I caught the pair of them I would have probably been in the same situation a few laps later.
If he was a newbie, his instructor should have instructed him to let the other (faster) cars past, If there was no instructor with him he should have been more aware of his surroundings and let me by. If he was aware that I was there and was just refusing to let a lowly Civic by, shame on him.....
Of course I am the idiot who should have pulled off and I am the idiot who posted the video which likely further damaged his ego and that was not my intention. At the time I just wanted a few clean laps to test the changes I made to the car.
I make new friends where ever I go.....:)

Doesn't solosprint require a triangle on the rear of the car to denote a novice driver? Or was this guy signed off in his death mobile. :p

For those who bring 'crazy' cars to the track with little or no experience, someone running the event should be aware and help them find coaching. I suspect quite a few 'mechanic's will bring whatever they can build that passes tech out to the track, which should be considered a GOOD thing, since they won't be driving it on the street ;)
Re: insane RX7 - ya, its pretty nutty, but if you spent $0 building a toy like that, wouldn't you want to drive it? I think its great to see the creations people dream up.

its always an issue with the slower cars..and unless you have gobs of power its sometimes hard to get around slower cars that wont let you by...
too bad we cant MAD MAX people a bit...
hmmm I bet I could build up a pretty cool mad max car..with some nasty bumpers

Haha, the same thing happened in our session. I think it was Dave Barker or Chuck that said, "I think we'll need the red flags for this group." Then before you could say anything, the green Miata looped it.
Good times from the timing tent. :p

This may be a stupid question and off topic but are you allowed to pass anywhere on track or in just certain parts of the track (i.e) straight runs.I have yet to compete in solosprint or any lapping.
There are designated point by passing in the lapping sessions only. No passing is allowed during competition nor is there passing in any corner during lapping....
