The HADA organized SoloSprint Events 3, 4 are on June 13, 14'09 at Shannonville. Please come out to support our club in the run to another SoloSprint Club Championship. We have had an excellent start to the season at the first two events but a lot of other club competitors weren't ready for the first events so we must continue to win points.

We will need some help during the weekend with such jobs as:
help with the BBQ, put up Caution tape, put up HADA banner, put out corner pylons and lapping marker pylons, Starting cars during lapping, clean up on Sunday, etc. Hope we can count on your help. Volunteers?

Hey John,

I'm planning to camp Fri and Sat nights so I will help out for sure. I'll find you at the event and you can give me my work orders. I do need to get back fairly early on Sunday so I'd prefer to help with all the jobs other than the cleanup at the end of Sunday.

Thanks guys, I'll be organizing on Saturday so either find me or I'll hunt you down.

We'll try to get caution tape and the banner up on Friday night. Not sure if I'll be able to get to the track until 8 or 9pm on Friday.

The ATR guys will be there camping this weekend. Let me know if you need any help. I enjoyed clerking last time, I'd do more of that again.

Also, do we have to bring firewood for a campfire?

ShaneG

I can probably bring some wood.

But won't be there for Friday night.

No camping for me - I'm a big wuss. :p But I'll be there for the "festivities". I can bring some wood too as I have about 50 broken drum sticks ... I guess you could make a log if you tape a bunch together. :D

I will be there on both days, but I will not be camping.

If you guys need help with anything just let me know.

Ummmm .... what is the address? I will use a GPS to get there :| ... anyone?

I just sent John P an e-mail about this, but just in case he's left for SMP already, could one of you please pass along the message that I may not be there Saturday so he'll need to arrange for a different a Starter/Flagger for morning practice lapping. Thanks!

I wish it was Game 7. My brother just checked into the hospital and my dad needs to stick around town to keep an eye on things, so no Corvette racin' for me tonight or tomorrow. But if things go well and my bro isn't in the hospital too long, we'll try to sneak up there for Sunday.

Great job this weekend everyone! I'm not sure how Sunday turned out results-wise, but on Saturday HADA dominated the standings and put on a mean BBQ dinner too!

Special thanks to Fram and Shane for doing the grilling duties, Bryan and Amanda for helping to clean-up afterwards, and everyone else that chipped in to help out around the track.

Oh yeah, congrats to that David guy for winning the whole event on Saturday by .005 on backup times!

Hi Jay,

sorry was up in northern Manitoba fishing...missed the event

..I planned on going to the July 4/5 days at Mosport ..however it seems I am banned from coming unless I Go to mosport prior to that day to test my front wing out?

I proposed that I use free lapping time during the school to do it..will see what the "safety senate" comes back with..

not sure why I am being picked on..when we have allowed all kinds of other race cars to use solo sprint as test days for all out race cars..

Interesting end of the day for me. The front left brake line on my dad's C6 Vette separated where the soft line is crimped into the bango bolt fitting at the caliper. This happened with zero warning as I entered the heavy braking zone into Turn 10 on Pro (the tight left before making the right onto the front straight). I had my Driftbox in the car at the time but haven't looked at the data yet, but I'd guess I was doing 120 km/h or more when I went for the brake pedal at my usual braking point and the pedal went to the floor with zero stopping power. Not a good feeling. From there it was a wild ride into the dirt, but thankfully the car didn't roll and I missed the inside wall along the front straight. Damage appears to be limited to the plastic bits under the front nose, the brake ducts, and the fender liners, as well as a broken weld on the front rad sub-frame and a bit of damage to the driver's side sideskirt. All things considered, it could have been much worse.

Many thanks to all who expressed their concern and helped out with the repairs. Jon, Will and the ATR team helped me plug up the broken brake line with a long bolt and a hose clamp so that dad could drive home with three working calipers. Rick Arbor let us try to fit his C5 brake line (since he trailers his car), but it didn't quite fit. And Wes and Sonia and the Paczynski boys were really helpful too, as was Dr. Dave and Mohamed.

To add insult to injury, when I was driving home in my G35, I hit a blown truck tire that was in my lane (had cars on both sides of me at the time, so couldn't do much to avoid it, since the SUV in front of me straddled it and gave me no indication of trouble ahead). Damaged the paint on the front bumper and passenger side sideskirt. Awesome...

Wow dave, quite an accident. I was the first guy in the following run group so only saw the red flag. That could've been so much worse. You've got a horse shoe dude implanted somewhere on your body. Glad your dad made it home ok. Even the busted tire could've been much worse than some bumper damage. I'd be buying a lottery ticket this weekend if I was you. :D

Dave, it was good to see your dad drive home afterwards. I didn't see the incident, and I'm glad I didn't see it since it would have psyched me out. Must have been a scary time for your dad too since he was right there at the marshall station. But as everyone else said it's good that nothing worse happened.

Great job Chris and John - had a great weekend overall. Great to see all the HADA folk as well as the other competitors. As I've said before, it's the people that make it fun.

Haha. Very well put, and thanks on the second part.

Miles, yeah, I do have a horseshoe, all things considered. I'm actually kinda glad I was driving when the brake line failed, since maybe he wouldn't have gone off as straight and rolled the car (though I still got lucky it didn't roll in that soft dirt once the car pitched sideways after the initial impact with the dirt when I went straight off). Also could have been much worse with that truck tire on the highway. If it had punctured my tire, I would have been stranded since the space saver spare tire won't clear the big brake kit on the car.

I'll post a couple of pictures of the action later tonight..... Sonia managed to capture some of it. They should have brought out the truck just to collect the sod. You could have made a few bucks just on the sod you dug up (you'll understand when yo see the one picture...):)

As has been said before, glad everything turned out and everyone made it home....safely.

I think there's a Kensai day before the SoloSprint. If you can get into that and test your wing there, there won't be a problem.

Please send datalogs if you have them. I'm urious to see the longitudinal G-forces and back straight peak speed.

I think the worst I had it ... smashed in the wall :(.
Car is in the shop now I'll be picking it up on Saturday. Damn ... :(.

I didn't wanted to push it so I left - wanted to take it to a shop and make sure everything was alright with it.
Turned out was a good idea not to push it. The alignment was off on the front wheels and was pulling left like a mad car.

I feel sorry for Dave too. Poor guy ... having a such an accident - hope your car is alright and easy to fix.

Overall, Saturday left me with the feeling that was a bad day for Civics ... lots of small incidents.

Yeah dude, the zip ties did the trick! She looks like a drift car now. Did dad bum those zip ties off you? Thanks!

MrNewt, sorry to hear you hit the wall! I had no idea that happened on Saturday. Sounds like you just kinda scraped it since you were able to drive home?

Man, what a wacky weekend. On the upside, Andrew W and the AAR team did really well up at Mosport, so it wasn't all bad news for HADA. Plus DJM won the overall on Sat at SoloSprint and I assume Krispy won it on Sunday.

Unfortunately it was more then scratches.
The back fender was well pushed inside - lucky the rims were strong enough to take the impact.
Lost the side mirror, very small bump on the front fender and scratched on the door but no bumbs.

Overall it wasn't too bad. My pride was hurt a lot and my baby got hurt ;(.
But I guess if you don't fall, you don't learn to walk.

As a funny thing, the painter's tape that I use to write the number got imprinted in the car :| - I guess because of the friction with the wall.

Hey Newt. I was in the car when it happened. Talk about pucker power. You really feel powerless sitting in the passenger seat. All I remember yelling something and you doing an incredible job to scrub speed and change direction of the car as best you could.

From an instructor stand point seeing how someone reacts under stress is quite telling. Soon as we hit the point of no return you stayed calm, didn't panic, and played the cards your were dealt as best you could and prevented a far more more serious accident. I never felt like you lost complete control of the car. From the previous laps I felt safe and your car control was impressive. The mistake was a small one, just misjudging the entry - on any other corner you'd drop two wheels and carry on. That's not a corner that lets you apex that early.

Hope you don't lose the passion for the sport because that was an incredible piece of driving despite the tragic outcome. Probably doesn't sound like a compliment to say nice crash but as odd as it sounds, it was a nice crash. As crashes go, both yours and Dave's were good crashes in the sense that no one was hurt and the cars are both repairable.

Hope you'll let me instruct you again.

Maxi
06-15-2009, 10:27 PM
Miles taught me everything I know about crashing and breaking things :p Well, ok, he didn't teach me, but he's my role model...

Newt, sorry to hear the damage was more extensive than I'd hoped, but it sounds like with a good body shop you'll be back in business in no time. Best of luck with the repairs and hope to see you out at the track again soon. I don't think I'll be driving the Corvette again this year though -- will have to start bringing out the Civic since it's caged and therefore built to crash :)

Yeah, I was that other Civic that didn't survive Saturday without incident. Went off at the exit of turn 1 and ate dirt, lots of it. No serious damage though, but it took a night and some boozin to get my confidence back. Thanks again to Miles and Martin for the awesomely quick tire change service, twice! Otherwise, was a fun weekend! HADA BBQ & samosas were awesome.

Thanks to all the HADA crew for putting on a great SoloSprint weekend, and especially Ryan for driving from TO to organize the BBQ, etc.

The only sorry I have is to damage the car :).

This year for me it was sort of done anyway.

Geez... sounds like an action filled weekend. Glad to hear of the successful outcome of Dave's offroading. And I'm not as surprised of Mr Newt's incident now knowing Miles was instructing. :p

Actually I remember instructing a guy a few years back at Nelson who later in the day smucked up his car. I kept telling him to take it down a notch. *shrug*

Yeah turn 1 on Nelson... you don't really want to go inside or outside of it (or even off-line with all the marbles either). I remember Perry almost rolling his Z06 on the inside there. It just sort of skipped like a rock on the infield.. scary to watch, probably skidmark inducing otherwise. :)

Maybe you boys could get a group discount on drycleaning your gitch. :p

I was in the timing tower and saw the car hit the wall, and I pretty much said the same thing up there, haha.

(the rim didn't clear the brakes the first time)

Probably an after-thought but some of us figured you would have swapped that wheel to the back.

By the way, what offset are the wheels? Any rubbing issues with them?

bsclywilly
06-16-2009, 09:21 AM
I didn't realize it was scraping the caliper until after Miles drove away with the jack. Next time around about an inch of wheel spacers fixed that.

+36 offset, 15x8 with a 10 mm spacer. It took a bit of effort, but they don't rub on the track. Full steer, going up driveways doesn't work though.

Hi Stephen,

I dont have any data logging equipment..its all seat of the pants..and times of course...I am contacting Kensai to hopefully get a spot lapping July 1..will have to take a day off since its mid week...this series is a PITA

back straight speed based on gearing will be 248-255kph or thereabouts.

the car will handle awesome..I already know that..it will be very predictable..and I would think dropping 1-2 seconds a lap will not be unheard of..at least thats what I think...

at 255kph..the nose of this car gets VERY light..thats whats dangerous..not adding aero to stop it

not sure what difference it is if I test the car in lapping day or test it during the solo sprint school (probably they are scared of liability, however with this EXTREME scrutiny of my car the series is seriously fucxored if a injury actually occurs to any OTHER car due to mechanical failure that could have been prevented since a court would now expect the same level of scrutiny of ALL cars.) If an incident occurs now in the future in our series its screwed.. the correct response should have been "run the car, the design and safety of the machine is the competitors responsibility soley" thats all..they have actually sealed the series fate if an incident occurs in our series..and they just dont see it..or are blind to what they are doing in a legal sense..they have set up the perfect storm for liability suits of all other cars in the series in case of mechanical failure resulting in harm or death..pretty stupid if you ask me..anyway

we allow f2000, old Maleks with front wings, dwarf cars, cascars, ect ect...with no issues...

I was starter and saw Mr. Newt's incident. From where I was I seemed to be as undramatic as is possible for actually hitting the wall. obviously understeered, but seemed to hit flush spreading the impact.

*Poke Miles* I said the same thing:p

*Kudos to Miles* Thanks d00d your tips really helped me find/ remember the line.

I did not see Dave's. I got out of the car in time to see him drive back up the track to pit in. what was amusing (in the whew, everyone is all right kinda' way) was to see Pratt get out of the car and take two steps back and stare it down - WTF you do that for? f'ing cars!

I did not go down to the end of the pit to see you as it was obvious you were OK, and there were a bunch of people around you already, the last thing you needed was more gawkers.

Other than the incidents, I had a great weekend.
I did started duties for the Sat morning lapping, I got a chance to do some lapping when the Drivers meeting was being held. I went through turn 1,2, and 3 on the warm up and all was good until I got to 4 (the left) turned in, nothing, dial in more, more and with my arms almost crossed, it turned  so I did a 2nd really tentative lap, turn right OK, turn left, it felt like I needed 3 time the input. track out, pit get the car jacked up
It turns out that the right upper control arm camber adjustment screws had backed off. I ran off to let Krispy know that I might miss my first session or might have to run out of order. Borrowed Will's camber gauge, but as the car was on uneven ground, I could not make heads or tails of what the setting was. I pushed the top of the wheel as far as I could (without pushing the car off the jacks) and tightened the screws...off we go. timed competition without turning a lap since 2006:(

Luckily I read all the comments from Bryan's thread and things slowly fell into place. I was looking at the video this morning and I could see myself learning the track corner by corner - actually kinda cool -

I remember seeing Bryan Sperandei absolutely flying through 1 and thinking "Sweet Jebus that is fast, I'd sh!t myself going that fast" ... and at the end of the day I was only about 4/10's off his time....which means... I probably should have shat myself:D I went faster every session but only a few 100ths, did not quite catch Rob in the NSX.

Sunday was similar, but with morning lapping, Miles gave me a bunch of tips that I slowly assimilated. I found myself between gears in a few spots and used the solo 2 idea of not shifting and trying to maintain the momentum (Ok, it's not a solo 2 idea, but that is where I learned it;) ) but I was still screwing the last turn ROYALLY! Wes and Dave pointed it out and confirmed what I suspected - Slow turn too fast! I was pushing like a SOB, so in the next session I slowed down more and everything got better.
However the first lap was a 1:20.10 which was 3ish tenths slower! the 2nd was 1:20.20 - WTF then lap 3 was 1:19.1:eek: Yay 3/4 seconds faster than my best in the morning...but I was not sure what I did diferently!

The last session it came together (I was down to 1/8 tank of gas) Turn 1 I could not quite stay full throttle, lifted to 1/2, turned in and then back to WOT, hard stab on the brakes, turn into 2, a little rotation WOT. I got the 3 - 4 better, (still braking a little early and a little more than necessary) hit the Hairpin and got on the gas

Have I mentioned how much I love the LSD?:D

At the end of Fabi straight, hit the brakes hard just past the 50 marker @ ~170 (indicated, I don't know actual corrected #) turn in, track out, tap and turn get the rear rotating one way then the other (I love when we can dance with the car! - I think that that is my favorite sensation / memory from the weekend ) brake turn into 9 manage speed through 10 unwind and go to the finish best time 1:18.50 (78.503) IIRC Dr. Dave got me by a tenth.

Have I mentioned that the last time I drove on Pro was 2004 or 2005 when HADA had a lapping evening - I have only 10 - 15 laps EVAR!

Good times with the Gang watching Krispy pass the Touge guys at warp 9 or inside out them through 7-8, Toyota Tundra's lapping, poseurs with arms out the doors, ahhh quality entertainment!...then a bonfire with the usual jokes and BEER! I don't often get the chance to have more than 1, so I was feeling good that evening...I did not realize how much I had to drink, even after walking across the field twice to go to the washroom, until I got into the tent and was taking my shoes off and nearly fell over:o But I probably should not mention that!:D

as always it is the people that make the event. Thanks to everyone

I was starter and saw Mr. Newt's incident. From where I was I seemed to be as undramatic as is possible for actually hitting the wall. obviously understeered, but seemed to hit flush spreading the impact.

Actually I forced the car to over steer.
You will be amazed how the car handles in curves - very little under steer. It actually tends to over-steer a little, depending on the speed and angle of the curve.
At the DDT school, in the rain, I was able to drift a little bit like a RWD car and maintain the drift around the round part of the skid pad.

At Shannonville, I toked that corner too fast and a little early and the apex pushed me towards the wall with the front-left angle of the car. If I would of hit the brakes the car would of been totaled for sure.
Miles got scared like hell and he was preparing for the impact :) yelling "TOO FAST, TOO FAST!".

So, I lift the foot from acceleration to force the rear to come around. As soon as I felt the rear coming around and got the car on a straight line parallel with the wall I slammed the acceleration to force it to go forward and try to control it with the wheel to be as much as parallel with the wall hoping to do as less damage as possible.
The front got little impact and the back that was still sliding got the most of it.

After that I was yelling "FCK!!!" and punching the wheel.
Now that I am thinking back, I cannot stop laughing on how desperate Miles was :).
I'm really sorry for the scare buddy :D.
