View Full Version : ATTS 3: Touge

On weekends in the narrow mountain roads of japan, enthusiasts would gather to test themselves and their driving skills. Two drivers would challenge each other to the top of the mountain in hopes of capturing the glory of the win. This challenge was called “Touge”.
The SPDA has successfully captured the feeling of what these challenges were like. An adrenaline inducing competition between two challengers competing for top honours, and continuing the challenge with each successive win. Mosport DDT will be converted into that challenge, the track modified to simulate narrow roads single car bridges, and wide open straits. Two cars will be lined up 200 feet apart, for the lead car, your job is to extend the gap, for the chaser, your job is to close the gap. Cross your finish line first and you move on to the next challenge. Lose, and you watch the rest of the day from the sidelines.
True to ATTS fashion, you don’t need to win your class to win a prize, our sponsors Toyo Tires, JRP, Petro 94, Royal Purple, Stoptech Brakes, and many many more will be drawn at the end of the day to all that participated. All draws are random and you must participate to win.
Practice all morning, competition in the afternoon, the best value in track days, courtesy of the sponsors.

Mr Deneka, how do we pre-register for this?
engsr
07-05-2011, 10:12 AM
There is no pre-registration, from what I've seen. Don't worry - just show up and drive.
I will be there Sunday.
Is it just me, or did G get spanked by a Protege? :)

Pretty sure that's Andrew driving, not G.

Chris, we're looking for some experienced volunteers who could perhaps take a flagging role. Talk to Ivano when you get there to arrange an entry discount if you can contribute some marshalling time or the like.

This is probably the best value in track time in Ontario. Couple that with the the prizes and giveaways and you get a win win win event.
Beginners welcome, and loaner helmets are available for FREE courtesy of JRP.

LOL!
I need to find a picture of your NSX parked on the sidelines at race events.. that'll probably be a better representation of how not to Touge :)
EDIT:
Thanks Steve, i'll pre-register the guys in the morning... and i'll get back to you about helping out. How many people do you need?
LOL..that's a big Honda lawnmower you've got there, Chris ;)
I assume there's a judge (or judges) who determine the winner for each Touge run? Anyway, sounds like a lot of fun -- I'll have to give one of these a try once the leg is a bit stronger.

The funny part about this sequence? Before he's even in the grass, you can see me in the Tilley hat at the marshal station calling the 4WO on the radio. :p

And a valuable lesson should be learned. If you look closely you can see the un-named driver is staring at the grass the whole time.
He's just lucky there were no hay bales around......
He should get bonus points for keeping his foot down!

Steve, I may be able to come out, if I do, I can help wherever needed..let me know
I think I have found and fixed the oil leak, but if not, I'd rather find out for $75 rather than $more at the big track.
is it looking like there will be spots available?
Slowpoke

Shane: Sounds great! Yup, spots available. Send your pre-registration (see above) if you can. If you're referring to an oil leak, you're welcome of course as I'm sure you'll keep everyone else's safety in mind. :)
Chris: I asked the organizer about volunteers, and he said "The More you bring, the less work we'll have for any one person, so as many volunteers as you've got. Many hands make light work." :D

It's not much, but last event I pulled out immediately when I discovered it.
I should be able to know better after a few runs around the skid pad and upper paddock - before ever hitting the track:cool:

See you Sunday.

Thanks guys!
I'm off to my next job on Sunday, so I can't be there. Ask for Ivano or Joe and say, "Steve said we'd get a discount for volunteering." :)

I thought I had...but Nope!!!
I'm out!!!!!:mad::mad:
Anyone have any suggestion on where I can take the car to be looked at?
Rick at RT Motorsport is good with that kind of thing. He's an excellent trouble shooter. HADA's very own Mark Botelho at Defcon Racing would be another good option.

Here's a video of my battle runs. Some funny moments, like trying to find the grip in the rain and the GTECH falling off and jamming the gas pedal. Enjoy.

That was a really strange place to lose the car at 7:15. You were on the brakes and just starting to turn in so it doesn't look like a lateral grip issue. Even if it was rear lockup I wouldn't expect it to snap like that. I'm wondering if it's not a suspension issue like coil or bushing bind? Is there a rough part of the track there that you weren't hitting in the other runs? It looked like you might have turned in a little sooner than you had been previously.

I really don't know what caused that, to be honest. I know I tried to brake a tad deeper into that turn, but I wasn't trail braking or at least not trying to. Not that I think this was the reason but I corded the RF tire and the tires overall were basically done (slick RA-1s). Could explain a bit of the traction/stability issues I had under braking but I had the same issue on the GP with my Star Specs, so I don't know.

How are your trailing arm bushings Bryan?
engsr
07-12-2011, 11:48 AM
I was thinking trailing arm bushings too. I'll have to take a look at them the next time I have the car out.
RA-1s when they get down to that hard layer just before the cord are extremely unpredictable and can cause snap oversteer like you experienced, Bryan. Been there, done that. Always best to scrap your RA-1's before they get down to that last hard layer of rubber.
BTW, lots of entertaining hand gestures and lawn mowing in that video :) Thanks for posting it! Looked like tricky conditions with that bit of rain sprinkling, especially on bald-ass RA-1s.

Bryan, did you get any videos of when we were all lapping afterwards?

I especially like his "what the fuck" hand motion when he was turning on the back straight and it was understeering hahaha

Ha, I do that all the time. It's a reflex move.
I didn't get any video but I have Kenny's. After looking at his, I kind of wish I had my perspective. I'll post it up in a bit.
So who won the Touge anyway? Orido or Tsuchiya?

Took the car out just now for a once-over. I looked at the trailing arm bushings and the right one has some cracks in the rubber, but the metal piece is not torn from the bushing. The car generally isn't snappy, so I will guess that it could have been the tires/me pushing a bit too hard. Meh, I still had fun.

Now that it is too late, I think I have found the leak...
I had the day today to spend wrenching and I believe I have discovered that the leak, it appears to be coming from the Tranny! It is looking like the culprit is the mid shaft seal
I'm glad I found it, but it is not the easiest to get at *shrug*...I just hope that is all:rolleyes:
I just might get it done for the last Shannonville OTA event and barring that Thanksgiving at Mosport ;)
