Hi
Not too think too much about this - I know the driver needs the most improvement in this case... just want some advice from the pro's
I attended the last event of last year and had a great time
I recently bought some used (zero tread) Yoko A0008R tires - and will be mounting them on the stock RSX rims - 16"x 6.5" - the tires are 225/50/16
I got these 4 tires for $100 total - so it seemed like a good idea, that might save my daily drivers some use
I also have my daily drivers - 16" x 7" rims - with 225/50/16 Falken FK452
I have never driven R compound slicks and will likely not have time to practice on them
What rim/tire combo should I start the year with?
I hope to attend all 6 events - but am wondering if I should jump in with the Yoko's on the first event?
Also, what is the learning curve on these? run soft? run hard? ideal PSI? launching differences?
I have lots to learn
Thanks in advance

The general consensus is to stick with street tires until you've reached their limits, then switch to R comps. Streets are a good learning tire because they give you feedback on where they are limit wise. R-comps generally don't give as much feedback and they hide a lot of driving mistakes as well.
Considering you've only done one event, I would suggest stay with the street tires. Do a few events with them, get comfortable with your car, your driving abilities, etc. Two or three events shouldn't kill your tires much.

Are you talking about competing in Autoslaloms?
I agree with Bryan, stick with street tires for your first season or at least the first few autoslaloms. It much easier to learn the skills required to be improve as a driver. Driving on street tires your first season will make you faster on your second season compared to someone that starts trying to learn to autoslalom using R-compounds from the beginning.
The wider rims are better for performance driving.
But in your case it will cost double to dismount and then mount the street tires to the other rims and then get the Rs installed on the 7" wide rims.

Yes - Autoslaloms only
Thanks guys - I will wait until the 3rd event or so
See you at the open house event
Don't pick a certain number of events. Wait till you can get around a course in reasonably comparable time to others with streets, and without understeering into corners. The better you are, the longer your R's will last.

You can mount the Yokes on a dry, warm summer day and drive them around your neighbourhood to get an idea for how the cornering forces change.
Well, I'd start with street tires as well for the audible feedback. Most streets work well with soft audible protest (indicating slip angle). Screaming? You're slow. Stop that.
Once you are used to recognizing the condition that sometimes when you turn in more, you actually get less turning force (you exceeded the ideal slip angle of the tires) and you're used to unwinding some steering and then dialing it in again... that's the right time to switch to R's.
However, complicating the matter, is the extremely cheap cost of your R's. I'd want to get onto them quickly. I'd make a goal of the third event as well, at least to try them. You can always go back to the streets.

Thanks everyone - I will be using the streets at the start of the year
Good suggestion on driving around the 'hood on the R's - I really want to test different PSI and launching as well
