Hello! so the engine is recently built and dyno tuned (167/130), B20B nonVTEC. The engine makes power to 7000rpm so that is the shifting point for me, but I don't shift at 7000 every time of course. :p

I am currently using AMSoil 20W50 and I find that when the shifting is done at 7000, there are burning oil smell, only happens at high rpm though. Everything is connected, I am not running a oil catch can or anything else. The head is fully rebuilt and does have new valve seals and whatnot. The bottom is stock. The head is P8R with VTEC size valves, I used stock B20B OEM gasket kit, I suppose the valve seals are the same?

Is it the oil, too thick?

------------------

A little tuning question, if the engine is tuned with 91 octane gas, does it have to stay with 91 all the time? Reason I am asking this is because the engine was said to have 9.2CR and was on 87 all the time. Then the P8R head was milled 0.005 but the CR should still roughly stay under or around 10:1 (though online calculator only gives 8.6ish) I have heard people say that only use higher grade unless engine knocks - and I have no idea what a "knocking" condition sounds like...

Sorry if I seem like all over the map :(

Thanks guys.

Amsoil it a wonderful oil, but 20w50 is too thick. 10w40 max is what are motors can handle on a repeated basis.

Run the grade of gas that you more was tuned for. So 91 is what you would use. You can use 89 if your not running aggressive timing, but once the motor sense's knock, it's going go into limp mode and retard the timing (not fun) for saving $4

I believe the non-VTEC motor doesn't have a knock sensor so it won't automatically retard the timing when there's knocking. I'm not 100% sure, so don't quote me on it.

Thanks guys.

So 20W50 is too thick eh? Well I have no more stock, this is just for one time use so on the next oil change, I will go back to 10W40 or something around that grade.

The Amsoil 20W50 is fantastic for a turbo motor that sees 110C - 120C+ oil temperatures.
