View Full Version : Street tire class?

Is there a reason why HADA doesn't split the 6 classes into street tire and r-compound tire classes? It would only be fair for the street tire guys, who simply cant compete for points since they don't have r-compound tires.
I recently went to a different club's autocross event and was put in a class which was limited to 140 and up treadwear rating, even with my oem tires i managed to do extremely well. But I'll lucky if i can even break into the top 10 in my class at HADA events due to the fastest guys running on slicks.
If the classes wont be split, can at least the results mention which cars were on street tires.

The leader of class 4 runs on street tires.
At event number 2, the Class 2 leader used street tires for his last two runs and still would have had the overall FTD on streets.
The driver makes the difference, not the tires. :)

So looking at his results, he lost around 2 seconds going to street tires(which street tires? there's a whole lotta sticky ones out there).
If i would gain those 2 seconds, assuming i switched to r-compounds, i would easily get into the top 10 in event #3, and break into the top 5 in event #1. This would seem a lot more fair and competitive for me i were running for points.

Heh i would say both make a difference, not just the driver.

Yes, tires are going to make a difference, but at the same time (without any intent to be condescending, okay?), it's not an instant 2 seconds, which is why Bryan's comment on driver being the more important factor. There is a learning curve to Rs that you have to consider, both in driving style and tire management.
Plain and simple, the best return on investment is on driver training.
There will no doubt be some discussion on a BoD level about tires for next year's series, given that tires are now factored in provincially in autoslalom and solosprint. We'll see what their results are from that experiment and decide if it's right for our club series.
If you want to build an argument for tires, and a suggestion for how you think it should work, I would be happy to bring it to the table for you. Feel free to email me your specs - president AT hadamotorsport.com :)

Sorry to threadjack, but if you're bringing that up, could you just adopt PITL rules? I love that it's AWD vs. AWD FWD vs. FWD and so on.
I love racing in an apples to apples type series.
I guess what I'm really trying to say is that RWD is better, and FWD is a handicap IMHO and I hate Miatas:p

Doesn't the current classification system (needlessly complex IMO) take into account the different tire choices? Since we're using a modified version of the solosprint rules, the -10 pips and-5 pips for street and non-premium-R's apply to put you in a class that is competitive for your tires and mods. But really, isn't this club series more for fun? I'd vote to make the rules reflect that idea more (read- simpler).

the HADA series does use the solo1 rules, but not for 2008 - which is the first time tires have made a difference in PIPs. Therefore, HADA does not factor in tires.
I honestly don't think at the club level we care much about tires, since the drivers that aren't really competitive (ie, in the top 10 of a class) aren't going to invest in tires. If a driver is seriously into the sport, the club events are more for fun while the provincial events are where the real competition is (notice how much different the last two events have been with all the provincial drivers ??).
The point has already been made above - you need to learn to use R-comp and uber tires to actually make full use of them. If you really think it's gonna help you by 2sec, find some second hand RA1s or V710s and see. I got my v710s for 250 for the set of 4 which have lasted the whole season so far, with a co-driver (teal civic with flames on the bumper). Its not expensive, and many newbies tend to spend at least that much money on their body kit or CD player :)
