Well I hope everyone had alot of fun at today’s karting event! We started off the day with an AWESOME continental breakfast provided to us FREE courtesy of GPK! Not only did GPK give us breakfast they also threw in a 4th session for no additional cost!! Once everyone was all ‘fueled up’ we hit the track. We began with a 10 lap practice session followed by 3, 18 lap races beginning with random grid starts that Ziggy  (our pit manager) picked. GPK points were awarded based on finishing position.

We also had 2 people who not only raced with us, but also joined HADA this morning! I’d like to welcome Tim S. (friend of Peter L.) and Paul B. to the club. …hopefully we didn’t scare them off.. LOL

The Winter Karting Series includes 5 events:

Event #1 Sunday November 2nd

Event #4 Sunday March 15th

Events run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
Registration is open 8:30 am and closes at 8:55 am.
Driver’s meeting is at 9:00 am, sharp, in the VIP Lounge.

GPK will be providing trophies for the top 3 finishers. As always each event we will have our ‘lucky draw raffle’ for all HADA competitors which includes goodies such as GPK passes and HADA swag donated by the HADA BoD. So if you don’t win any hardware you’ll still have a chance to take something home!

How to Register
RSVP by posting in the event thread on the HADA forum, or emailing the HADA Competition Director, Ken at: competition <at> hadamotorsport <dot> com.

The deadline for event registration is 7pm on the Thursday before each event. RSVPed participants are liable for their registration fee. If you are registered, but cannot to attend, you must find someone to cover your spot or pay your registration fees.

Event Structure
Each event requires a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 30.There will be a maximum of 10 karts on the track at a time.

The top 10 HADA members will earn points towards a series ending championship. Overall series champion will be based on the best 4 out of 5 events.

The format for each event will be posted in the karting event thread in the HADA forum.

We ended up having only enough drivers for one run group, so we decided to change the format of the event. Greg (our Pit Manager) suggested a 18 lap warm up session, followed by a 8 lap shootout qualifying session, and finish with two 18 lap races. We also decided to mix things us by having a standing start instead of a rolling start for our races.

For the second race our grid position was based on our finishing position for the first race. GPK points were awarded based on finishing position and the driver with the most amount of points over the two races would be the overall winner for the day!

Greg came out and battles with us during our two races! The racing was mostly clean but there were battles for postition all over the track and there were a few casualties… Tod F. was a victim of the ‘Fram Effect’ in the first race. (by “someone” with a red GPK shirt) Moose got punted while going through one of the sweepers and we had a few red flags from guys spinning. But the most fiercest battle was between Ryan M. and Bryan E. battling for first place! All in all it was a great event fun was had by all!

Next and FINAL event is on Sunday March 16th!!!

The format for the event was 2, 10 minute qualifying rounds, and one final 20 lap main.

GP Kartways changed the layout of the track over the holidays, so it was our first event with the new configuration. The two tight hairpins at the end of the straight were removed, and replaced with a straightaway going all the way to the end of the track followed by a long right hand sweeper into a tight series of right and left hand turns! It was going to be interesting to see who be the fastest on the new layout!

The morning started off a little slow. We had a few late arrivals, but Greg, our pit manager, had no problems adding everyone in and re-sorting the field for qualifying. I went out in the first group and man, the track was cold and it took a little longer to get the tires up to temp and get some stick! Being the first round, and since my Timmy’s hadn’t kicked in yet, I let a few people by and followed them just to see their lines.

By end of the first round of qualifying, most of the drivers were in the 23-24 second lap range and starting to get a feel for the track.

The track definitely started to heat up and traction was better, but it still took the usual 4-5 laps for the tires to heat up and to figure out how the new kart would handle. The runs were mostly clean as people were doing their best to have a clean track in front of them to get the fastest lap possible. I on the other hand… well I had David M. in front of me and was having way too much fun trying to keep my front bumper on the back of his kart! Yeah, I was supposed to be just qualifying, but it was just too much fun seeing how far and how deep I could push him through the corners! I never did have a chance to dive bomb and pass; I just ran out of time! I did get caught giving him some “love” through one of the sweepers as we were passing a back-marker and I got served a 2sec. penalty! (ooooopsie! :))

So once the dust had settled, it was Ryan M. who took Top Qualifier honors with a 22.84, and Bryan E. second with a 22.91, and Peter L. with a 22.92! Only 0.08 seconds separating first through third!

Unfortunately we were running late, so the Junior Racing League had to start @ 10:30am, so we ended up taking turns on the track. All I can say is there’s nothing more insane then seeing a field of 8-11 year olds pulling off high to MID 22 second lap times! One of them even pulled a 22.5 which would have put him as Top Qualifier in our group! It was impressive seeing <80lbs kids, some with multiple seat boosters and some with hockey pucks taped to their shoes (just to reach the pedals) pulling off helllla fast laps! The older group of kids… the adolescents (12-15) going through puberty with hormones and testosterone raging were a whole different story! The FRAM effect was in full swing and it was carnage out there! It was P.I.T. maneuvers everywhere! At one point we saw one kart get air borne and pieces of kart flying! They waved the red flag and had to stop the race. It made us look like we were all driving Miss Daisy out there!

The finals started with Group C, which were the last 7 qualifying positions. We saw our very own MOOSE take the Group C win! He was struggling all day, starting off with a 24.47 best lap in the first round of qualifying, to a best of 23.54 in the second, but in the final, he hit a best lap of 23.08, taking off 1.39 seconds from his first session. As Moose took his victory lap with the checkered flag, I could only imagine if we could somehow strap a stuffed animal Moose onto his kart for next time.

Group B which were the people who qualified mid-pack. I started second behind Godwin with David behind me… and we were off! A few laps in I kept getting some “love taps” from David, but I held my line and kept seeing him trying to stick his nose under me! As I was driving defensively, Godwin got some distance but I was able to close the gap within a few laps as his kart seemed loose. BUT I went wide going into the right hand sweeper before the straight and David managed to get me sideways (not so much of a love tap - more like a punt!) and weaseled his way by! But like they say; “rubbin’ is racing!”

A few laps later I was closing in on David’s bumper and now I was giving him sweet love! But, I went wide (same corner as before) and out of NOWHERE Miles M. came blazing by! It’s like I hit the air brakes and he flew right by and was chasing down David! So in the end of it all, Godwin held on to win Group B, with David moving up to second and Miles with the banzai move of the day going from last to 3rd!

It was all on the line for the Group A Final. The best of the best, our fastest 8 drivers of the day. The top three finishers were going to go home with the bling and bragging rights! Ryan McDoom was starting on pole. The green flag dropped… and they were off! The first few laps in, Bryan went just a bit wide in the infield and Peter L was able to sneak through and moved into second place! Going down the backstretch I could see that Bryan’s kart was slower then the rest of the field with it making some nasty noises! (sounded like a diesel VW rabbit going “chug chug chug”… makes me wonder if anything happed to it in the carnage with the kids league!) But Bryan drove defensively and held off the rest of the pack! Ryan and Peter (touring car driver *cough* ringer *cough*) were battling it out for the lead!

Peter manged to sneak by Ryan and took over top spot! Ryan got back right behind Peter and stayed right on his bumper, lap after lap, after lap! At one point, going down the back stretch, McDoom was trying to use his Jedi Master skillz with his “come hither” motion with his right hand to reel Peter in! But the force was just too weak in McDoom! We kept seeing McDoom looking and jumping out to take a peek but just couldn’t make a clean pass! So Peter took the win, with McDoom in second, and Bryan holding onto third.

All in all I had a BLAST! I hope everyone else did too! After the trophy presentation we had our lucky draw for our competitors and gave away a few HADA T-shirts, a few toques, a Mobil 1 cap, and a HADA jacket all donated by the HADA BoD!
